MY YOUTUBE JOURNEY
Welcome to the reader's section
I'm Skyler. I'm a college student in my first year. Among many things, I love family, being an involved student, positivity, dance, and my YouTube channel. My channel, and my life in general since I've started the channel, has undergone many changes over the years.
I wasn't always a YouTuber, or more specifically, an LPSTuber. But that all changed one summer day in 2011 as I searched random things in the YouTube search bar, too bored to care what it was I found. One of those searches was life changing, though, because one press of the enter button and I had the opportunity to watch Sophie Garrett's (sophiegtv) work. The first LPS video I'd ever seen was the 7th episode of Littlest Pet Shop Popular: All's Fair in Love and War. I remember the title, even now, without hesitation. I watched her video, thinking to myself "What on earth...". Why would anyone do this? Put children's toys in front of a camera? Waste their time? That's when I noticed how popular she was: thousands of subscribers, hundreds of thousands of views. This was insane....and strangely entertaining. Before long, I'd fallen in love with Sophie's content and discovered a hidden community within my computer. It didn't take much to get me thinking about how I could be a part of it.
I experimented, testing my screenwriting skills and using Windows Movie Maker for the first time. It was all this vast, unexplored territory! I've always had a knack for writing, so creating scripts was more or less a piece of cake. But when I filmed my first video (LPS The Peak Trailer) I was discouraged. This was hard. I didn't have a surplus of LPS (only the few I'd uncovered from the basement from my childhood) and I had even fewer video making skills. However, with a determined mindset, I made it happen.
Editing was a nightmare. Windows Movie Maker made the beginning of each clip I used lag, and refused to render my files when I was done after one video. I decided that I needed something better, so I did my research and downloaded AVS Video Editor. It, too, was free, but planted an annoying watermark in the center of my videos. For Christmas that year, my parents paid to remove it. When I made my comeback to YouTube, I invested in a new editor, Adobe Premiere Pro CC! It's a sister editor to Final Cut Pro, so it's very professional.
Coming up with ideas for my videos was far from simple. After immersing myself in the world of LPS: Popular, all I could think of were identical plot lines. I knew that I aspired to be original, though, so I took my time and waited for something unique. It took time, but eventually I had something I could work with. And I called this something "LPS The Peak"!
I became bored with this series quickly, which led me to try my hand at another series. A new plot had been nagging at me. So, I picked characters and wrote the script for the first episode and went to work! Thus, Me, Myself, and I was born! This series is what made me more well-known on YouTube. After a while, though, I got bored with it, too; this led me to try my hand at shorts.
In this short time period, I had rapidly improved. I was now a confident LPSTuber, but not anywhere close to a popular one. It took about another half a year before I made any numerical progress. I went from having 100 subscribers to 500 subscribers from November 2011 to April 2012. And after a while....BAM! I was a hit! Each day brought new fans, and what I'd worked for was finally paying off!
In April of 2013, 1 year later, I finally became a YouTube Partner. It was everything I'd dreamed of and something I'd been awaiting since the day I'd heard about it!
There was a point in time, that lasted over 2 years, that I more or less abandoned my channel and my fans. I later tried to create a new channel, but abandoned it, too, because it just wasn't me. As the prospect of upcoming college admission portfolios became something I should be concerned about, it occurred to me that I should restart my original channel in hopes of growing as an artist and pleasing my subscribers. So that's what I did! I came back with the intent of rebooting my channel with a fresh start, leaving behind what I thought I knew about making a production and starting again with a new outlook, style, and content.
I also revealed that my real name is Skyler, not MacKenzie, which was the name I had been going by for years on YouTube for safety reasons.
Over the course of the years that I've been on YouTube, it's been nothing but incredible experiences. I've made countless friends and had so many fantastic times. LPSTubing is a roller coaster! It's an adventure that's full of wonder, fun, and creativity. But I assure you, it's been adventure well worth taking.
Here's to you, for helping to make me the Skyler that I am today. Here's to the many years I've had on YouTube.
And here's to many more.
